Why is Vitamin A one of the most important ingredients in skincare?
If there is one ingredient we would recommend learning about and introducing into your skincare routine, it is Vitamin A. Vitamin A is one of the most researched ingredients in modern skincare and is valued for its ability to support skin renewal, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, refine texture, brighten uneven-looking skin and promote a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.
What exactly is retinal?
Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is a next-generation form of Vitamin A. Retinal can work more efficiently than traditional retinol while still being formulated to be gentle enough for many skin types.
As we age, our natural skin renewal slows down. Dead skin cells can build up on the surface, leaving the complexion looking dull, uneven and less radiant. At the same time, collagen production gradually decreases, contributing to fine lines, loss of firmness and changes in skin texture. Using stabilised retinal and a progressive strength system allows you to introduce Vitamin A gradually and build your skin's tolerance over time. It acts up to 11 times faster than retinol in the conversion pathway.
Why should you start using it?
Retinal is not simply about treating wrinkles once they appear. Used consistently, Vitamin A can help to:

☀️ You can use retinal in summer!
This is one of the biggest skincare myths we hear. There is no need to automatically stop Vitamin A simply because it is summer. We strongly recommend using Vitamin A throughout the year, provided it is introduced correctly and you are diligent about daily sunscreen.
RETINAL AT NIGHT → SPF EVERY MORNING ☀️
If you are spending prolonged periods in strong sun, or your skin is becoming irritated or sensitive, your routine may need to be adjusted. And always follow the advice of your skincare professional.
How to introduce Crystal Retinal
Don't rush it! Vitamin A works best when introduced gradually.
First 2 weeks
Use your Crystal Retinal twice a week in the evening.
Weeks 3–4
Increase to every other evening, if your skin is comfortable.
After that
You can gradually progress towards every evening, depending on your skin's tolerance. Gradual introduction will minimise irritation and allow the skin to build tolerance.
Your evening routine
- Cleanse your skin thoroughly
- Allow your skin to dry
- Apply 2 pumps of Crystal Retinal over the face and neck
- Follow with your moisturiser
For your first use, we recommend patch testing 24 hours beforehand.
The next morning
We recommend Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+ (our Product of the Week last week). This is particularly good alongside retinal because it is both a moisturiser and SPF 50+ PA++++, so you don't need to layer a separate moisturiser and sunscreen unless your skin needs extra hydration. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It also contains squalane and multi-weight hyaluronic acid for hydration, plus photolyase and environmental-protection ingredients.
